Dr. Manoel Arcisio-Miranda

Manoel_edited_edited.jpg

I obtained a PhD degree in Science (Human Physiology and Biophysics) from Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Brazil. My doctoral research, with Dr. Joaquim Procopio, was focused on the molecular mechanism of proton translocation across biological membranes by free fatty acids. In 2007, I moved to The University of Wisconsin - Madison (USA) to conduct postdoctoral work with Dr. Baron Chanda and have used voltage clamp fluorimetry recordings to investigated the molecular basis of voltage-gated sodium channel gating and its modulation by local anesthetics. In August of 2010, I moved back to Brazil to start my current position at Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Department of Biophysics, and LaNEF is conducting my independent research activities.

Dr. Arcisio-Miranda is the Principal Investigator of LaNEF.

Postgraduate Students

rolf_edited.jpg

Rolf Matias Paninka (Graduate student)

Rolf started in LaNEF in March 2014. He is working on a translational project to understand, at the molecular level, the clinical manisfestations of TPP patients. He is characterising the electrophysiological properties of different Kir2.6 channel TPP-related mutations and its modulation by hormones. For that, he is conductiong molecular biology, patch clamp recordings, and high resolution confocal images. Rolf is funded by CNPq.

Luísa Ribeiro-Silva (Graduate student)

Luísa started in LaNEF in February 2014. She is conducting a project to understand the intracellular pH regulation of microglial cells. The long-term goal of her work is to study the molecular basis of proteins trafficking to the plasma membrane. Luísa is conducting primary microglial cell cultures, molecular biology, time-resolved fluorescence microscopy, and electrophysiology. She is funded by Fapesp.

Diego Orts (Graduate student)

Diego started in LaNEF in February 2017. He is conducting a project to understand the gating mechanism of the human voltage-gated proton channel (hHv1 channel). Also, he is looking for alternative systems to study membrane proteins, mainly ion channels. The long-term goal of his work is to study the molecular basis of ion channel gating and its modulation by lipids and drugs. Diego is conducting molecular biology, confocal fluorescence microscopy, and electrophysiology. He is funded by Fapesp.

Luciana Marciano Sergio (Graduate student)

Luciana started in LaNEF in March 2018. She is working on a project to understand the molecular basis of the antiglioblastoma activity of different cationic peptides. Luciana is characterising the cytotoxic action of those peptides using a multidisciplinary approach that includes flow cytometry, microscope fluorescence, and biophysics of membrane interaction. Luciana is funded by CNPq.

Elias Seif (Master student)

Elias started in LaNEF in January 2019. He is conducting a project to understand the anticancer activity of several terpenoids. The long-term goal of his project is to determine the molecular basis of terpenoid-inducing cell death. In his work, he is using biochemical, pharmacological, and microscope fluorescence approches. Elias is funded by CNPq.
